So You Were Told You Have a Gypsy in Your Spiritual Court

This post explains the spirit of the Gypsies who walk with those they choose to accompany in Espiritismo.

ESPIRITISMO/ SPIRITISM

Es la gitana que llega para bendecir al pueblo
Es la gitana que llega abriendo nuestros caminos
Es la gitana que llega para defender nuestra libertad
Esperanza, hoy yo te vengo a saludar

She is the Gypsy who arrives to bless the people
She is the Gypsy who arrives opening our roads
She is the Gypsy who arrives to defend our freedom
Esperanza, today I come to greet you

This song by Oba Ire captures the spirit of what the Gypsy spirit that walks with you can bring to your life. The Gitana arrives in your spiritual court with beauty, movement, power, protection, clarity, and joy. She brings messages from the spirit world, a rhythm that reawakens the soul, and a strength that defends your freedom.

The word “Gypsy” was based on a misunderstanding. When the Romani people arrived in Europe, many believed they came from Egypt, calling them “Egyptians” or “Gypsies.” In truth, their ancestors came from northern India and migrated across the Middle East and into Europe, especially Spain, where they became known as gitanos and gitanas. Their culture blended with Moorish and Spanish traditions, creating what we now know as flamenco. Flamenco is an art form of deep emotion, rhythm, and movement.

In Espiritismo, the presence of a Gitana or Gitano means you walk with a spirit guide who carries deep emotional intelligence, charm, mystery, and strength. These spirits often appear in misas with flair. A Gitana might wear a flowing skirt, gold earrings, a fringed shawl, and carry castanets or finger cymbals. Her presence is bold yet graceful. She may sway, snap her fingers, clap with rhythm, or twirl as she brings her message forward.

These spirits are known for their skills in divination. They work with playing cards, candlelight, dreams, and intuition. They speak on love, on healing, and on claiming your independence. Their advice is sharp and full of heart. If your Gitana walks with you, she will encourage you to live with passion, to trust your inner voice, and to stop playing small.

In literature and film, characters like Esmeralda from Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame carry the spirit of the Gitana archetype. Though fictional, Esmeralda embodies the beauty, grace, and strength associated with the Gypsy spirit. She dances, she defends Quasimodo, and she follows her heart even when it puts her at risk. Her story reflects how society often misjudges those who live outside its boundaries, and how truth and compassion still shine through.

The Gitana spirit you walk with carries that same kind of fire. She doesn’t walk with everyone, only those who are ready to move, to feel, and to grow. She teaches you how to find joy again. She calls out the truth. She helps you break chains, whether they are emotional, spiritual, or ancestral. And she does it with rhythm and power.

So if you were told a Gitana or Gitano walks with you, honor their presence. Speak to them. And remember the words of the song that opened this reflection:

She is the one who comes to bless the people. She is the one who opens our roads. She is the one who defends our freedom. Esperanza, today I come to greet you.
